Photoshop World 2015: It’s a wrap!

I just wanted to take a moment to thank all of you who attended my classes, sat in on my Adobe booth demos, and came up to me and said hello. I was especially happy to see the number educators that came up to me to thank me for my videos and to tell me that they use them in their classrooms. Wow! What an honor. Photoshop World is definitely my favorite show to work.

There’s so much inspiration and creativity happening and Photoshop World and I always leave with a list of things that I want to come home and try. I was also honored to see my work on display on the Photoshop 25th Anniversary display in the Adobe Booth. The work on display here was awe inspiring.

Not only was my work on display in the Adobe booth, but I happened to be flipping through the Photoshop World show guide and caught the F.J. Westcott Lighting add featuring my work with their Rapid Box 26″ Octa.

What I’m Teaching Next Week At Photoshop World

It’s that time once again! Next week I’m headed to my favorite conference (Photoshop World) to teach and I’m excited about my new classes! I’ll be teaching the regular favorites on Lightroom and Adobe Muse CC and my popular Adobe Premiere Pro CC for Photographers class. However, this year I’m adding a 2nd Lightroom Class as well as a NEW class on “Using Type to Make Your Designs Pop”. I’ll also be at the Adobe Booth doing sessions on “Adding Effects to Images”, “New Tools for Design” and I’m doing a session on the show floor in the Kelby Theater on “Creating a Successful Stock Photography Business”

A Behind The Scenes Look: LIVE broadcast of my Piedmont Park sunset shoot

It’s always fun to get out and shoot on my free time. Now with the Periscope App it’s easier than ever to invite people to watch live. This past weekend I did a live broadcast from my sunset shoot at Piedmont Park in Atlanta Georgia. I had over 100 people watching my short broadcast. With Periscope the broadcasts can be uploaded for replay for a 24 hour period. After that they are pretty much history. Sure Periscope allows you to save the video to your camera roll, but that video doesn’t include any of the comments or interactions (hearts) you received during your broadcast. Not to mention the fact that it’s in vertical orientation which really tends to tick people off on YouTube. I figured out a way to keep the video, comments, hearts and reshare it in a landscape view:

1. Within 24 hours of your broadcast you can plug your iPhone into your Mac running Yosemite (Mac OS X 10.10.x) and launch the QuickTime Player. From there you can choose your iPhone as the camera and audio source (see the details how to do this here). Now just press the record button in QuickTime and playback your Periscope broadcast from the Periscope App. This will effectively screen record your iPhone so that you’ll have a movie of all your Periscope interactions.

2. This still doesn’t solve the portrait vs. landscape issue. As of this writing the developers of Periscope are working on “landscape mode” but it’s not here yet. Therefore embrace it, don’t fight it. With Adobe Premiere Pro CC I was able to import my Periscope screen recording and then add other elements to fill up the space. Elements like still photos that I captured during the shoot and other videos such as drone footage.

While it will be absolutely phenomenal when Periscope offers landscape mode, you can make due in the meantime.

I have Gogo Wi-Fi on my Long Haul International Flight – Finally!

I’m headed back to Atlanta from Amsterdam today. The flight time is just over 9 hours. I did my usual downloads from my TiVo DVR the night before so that I would have some shows to watch and of course I have my MacBook Pro so that I can get some writing done. The last thing I expected on this Delta flight was to have WiFi internet all the way home! Sure I get my hopes up each time I board an international flight by looking for the familiar WiFi stickers found on 99% of all Delta domestic flights and like always there were no stickers present on this flight. However, once we got up to 10,000 feet I noticed that my phone was asking me to login to my corporate IPASS account (a roaming partner of Gogo). I just figured someone on the plane was faking a Gogo hotspot. However, it worked! I was blown away because I figured I wouldn’t see this until at least 2016. I asked the flight attendant just to make sure and she confirmed that “some” planes have it now and that we were “lucky” today. Lucky indeed!

So what does it cost to enjoy this international benefit? Since I have a corporate plan from work that covers Gogo InFlight WiFi I didn’t even think that about a cost difference at first, but as I started writing this I figured my readers would want to know. I went back to the regular logon page and the prices are high indeed. $19.95 for one hour and $39.95 for the whole flight. While I appreciate this being a work perk, I gotta say that I would gladly pay $39.95 for WiFi on this 9 hour flight. The amount of stuff that I can get done (including this blog post) is worth it to me. The next question is how fast is it? Gogo inlfight wifi in the states uses a celluar system (plane to ground) and from I can see it’s based on 3G technology. When it first came out the speeds were decent, but lately they have been slow to almost unusable. Still slow is better than nothing, so I use it all the time.

Since connecting to the ground over the ocean is not feasible, any plane offering international service requires satellite connections instead. One of the first thing I did was run 4 consecutive speed tests to get an average speed and while it’s not screaming fast, it’s faster than the domestic service. I’ll take it!

The Bottom Line

I remember wishing for WiFi on long haul flights for years. It almost brings a tear to my eyes to see it finally making its way into my life and I commend Delta for making these investments to make air travel a little less painful.

What I’m Teaching Next Week at Photoshop World Vegas

It’s almost time for my favorite conference, Photoshop World! It’s time to head back to Las Vegas and I’m really looking forward to it. Not only do I get to see so many of you, but I’m psyched about teaching some updated classes.

First up I’m teaching an updated “Intro to Adobe Muse CC” class. I did this class at Photoshop World in Atlanta and it went over great. This time I get to teach it on the brand new rewritten, 64bit native Mac/Win version. If you’ve always wanted to be able to create your own website, but don’t want to write code you’ll leave this class knowing how.

Also back by popular demand is my “Lightroom 5 Workflow” class. In this class I’ll take you through my Lightroom workflow from start to finish.

I’m also teaching a brand new “How to Edit Video with Adobe Premiere Pro CC”. This class is aimed at Photographers rather than videographers. I aim to cut through all the jargon and the interface to get right to the basics of how to edit video from your DSLR or other video cameras, smartphones, etc.

I’m also going to be doing short presentations in the Adobe booth on the trade show floor. I’ll be showing “Introduction to Creative Cloud”, “Photoshop CC Tips”, “New Tools for Designers” and “Lightroom 5 and Lightroom Mobile”,

Thank You for Attending the 2014 Adobe Create Now World Tour!

On behalf of Jason Levine, Paul Trani, Terry Ryan, Andrew Trice, Rufus Deuchler, Michaël Chaize, Dennis Radeke, our other co-presenters, organizers and staffers, we want to give you guys a big THANK YOU!

The Adobe Create Now World Tour for the 2014 Release of Creative Cloud has been a tremendous success and we’ve been on the road non-stop since June 18th.

It was great seeing so many of you in person and having you come up to me and tell me how much you enjoy my content.

While it’s always flattering to be asked to sign autographs, I was floored when a fan wanted me to autograph his laptop.

Some fans came from half way around the globe, even Asia Pacific.

It was also a pleasure showing you many of the cool new things in the 2014 Release of Create Cloud! The cheers, the oooohs, the ahhhhs, and the clapping were greatly appreciated.

We put the band back together and we’re headed out on tour! Jason Levine, Paul Trani, myself and several other Adobe Evangelists are headed out on the ALL NEW Adobe Create Now 2014 World Tour. We’ll kick things off with a LIVE event in New York that will be webcast worldwide. and then immediately after we’ll be heading to a city (hopefully) near you.

My First Session at HOW Design Live Rocked!

There’s nothing like showing up to do a session at a conference and seeing 400+ empty chairs. Your first thought is “Oh my God, I hope people attend this thing!” Well I must say that not only did have close to 400 people in my session yesterday at HOW Design Live, but it was the right 400 people. Like most presenters I draw my energy from the crowd. The better the crowd responds the more it will help me to do a better presentation. I had an hour to show: “Create Cutting Edge Websites. No Code. No Kidding”. Of course this session was all about Adobe Muse CC.

Judging by the number of mentions on Twitter, the crowd LOVED IT!
