New Updates to Lightroom – December 2017

New Auto Settings, powered by Adobe Sensei

“Auto” just got a whole lot more, well “Auto.” The NEW Auto Settings are powered by Adobe’s artificial intelligence “Adobe Sensei” Now instead of Auto doing the same thing to every photo based on a few parameters, the NEW Auto Settings will give you better results by actually analyzing your photo and comparing it to thousands of professionally edited photos to create a better result. This new option is now available across the board in Lightroom Classic CC, Lightroom CC and Lightroom CC on your mobile devices. The New Auto may or may not be your final edit, but even in situations where you want to do more to the image, it provides a much better starting point.

Adobe Lightroom CC vs. Lightroom Classic CC: Which one is for you?

Last week during Adobe MAX, Adobe took the wraps off its new photography system: Lightroom CC. Wait, wasn’t there already a Lightroom CC? Yes. Let me try to clear up some confusion I’ve seen out there. First off if you were already using Lightroom CC the good news is that Lightroom Classic CC is the same product that you’ve invested time in to learn and have been using for years. There is one change though besides the name. It’s much faster in most areas than it was before. The team has spent the last several months boosting the performance of Lightroom Classic CC, which is what we all wanted.

OK then what is Lightroom CC? The existing version of Lightroom has been branded Lightroom Classic CC and there is a brand new built from the ground up application called Lightroom CC. This new desktop application now fits in the Lightroom CC family as a seamless way for photographers to have their images everywhere.

Didn’t Lightroom (Classic) CC have the ability to sync my photos and have them everywhere? Not completely. If you import images into Lightroom Classic CC, you still have the ability to sync images, but what gets sync’d are smart previews and not the original full resolution JPEG and Raw files. Now with the NEW Lightroom CC you get full resolution files sync’d and backed up to the cloud no matter where you import them from. If I import my DSLR raw images they get sync’d to the cloud. If I shoot into the Lightroom CC app on my iPhone or iPad (yes Android too) the full resolution JPEGs or Raw files get sync’d to the cloud and appear everywhere.

Should I use Lightroom CC or Lightroom Classic CC?

You Can Now Shoot RAW on iPhone Thanks to Lightroom

Now You Can Shoot RAW on iPhone!

If you’re a photographer and an iPhone 6s (or higher) user, you’re going to be happy once you upgrade to iOS 10 and Lightroom 2.5 for iOS. With an iPhone SE, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus or iPad Pro 9.7″ you can now capture images in either JPG or DNG (RAW). The benefits of RAW over JPG have been well documented, but I decided to record a video not only showing how the new RAW capture feature works, but to also show you RAW vs. JPG comparisons from an iPhone 6s Plus and the quality differences:

I Have Lightroom in my Living Room on the Big Screen

Lightroom Apple TV

Yesterday, Adobe released the Lightroom Apple TV App. With this App installed on your 4th generation Apple TV you can log in with your Adobe ID and access/view any of your sync’d collections/photos.

Why Lightroom Apple TV is a big deal

The more Adobe Photoshop Lightroom becomes the center of my photography, the more I will want “Lightroom EVERYWHERE!” I already have Lightroom on my computers, my iPhone, my iPad Pro and the web. The next logical frontier was the living room. I use Lightroom not only to organize my photos and do non-destructive edits on them, but I also use Lightroom to “show off” my photos. I can do that one-on-one with my various “portfolio collections” via my iPad or iPhone or I could share a link to a specific collection allowing anyone to view on the web.

With the Lightroom Apple TV App this means that I can also show off my photos on the big screen anywhere in my home. There’s no need to export my photos and load them onto another device. There’s no reason to tie up my iPhone/iPad via AirPlay. I can just fire up the Lightroom Apple TV App, choose a collection and hit the Play button on the remote.

Honored to be in the Credits for Adobe Photoshop CC and Lightroom CC

I’m both thrilled and deeply honored to be included in the credits for both Adobe Photoshop CC and Lightroom CC. As I approach my 20th Anniversary at Adobe next month, I can appreciate all the hard work that goes into these products. It’s been great being a part of it.

Adobe Apps on iPad Pro and Intro to Photoshop

IMG_1814-Edit_sm.jpg

As expected, Apple just took the wraps off the latest addition to the iPad family, the NEW 9.7 inch iPad Pro! I’m excited about this one because it’s the iPad that I really wanted. When the iPad Pro was introduced last year, the first thought that came to mind was “I don’t really want/need a bigger iPad.” However, after experiencing the fidelity of the Apple Pencil, I knew that this was the iPad to have for all things creative. Now that there is a 9.7″ iPad Pro with the same speed and Apple Pencil support it’s clear that Apple is serious when it comes to enabling creatives to be creative on mobile devices…
