The Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8 Lens is AWESOME!

I got a chance to work with the (fairly) NEW Nikon Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8 lens over the past couple of weeks and it’s just freakin’ AWESOME! Couple it with a Nikon D700 (or other Full-Frame body) and it’s even better. This is not my first wide angle lens. I also own a Sigma 10-20mm. However, I was never really thrilled with it due to the distortion I was getting on the lower right corner. Sure it was an easy fix in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom, but it was something I had to fix every time I used it.

This Nikkor lens takes things up to a whole new level. It’s fast and the focus is spot on. There’s not much more I can say about it. It’s bigger and heavier than my previous lens, but it’s also much better quality! You just can’t go wrong with good glass.

Also for my Nikon fans that have been waiting for me to do more testing with the D700 (after my initial impressions) here’s a low light test.

A training class – D700, ISO 3200, 18mm f/8.0 1/8 sec

I’m very pleased with the performance thus far. The real test will be a friends wedding that I’m shooting in September.

    I have an old Sigma non AF 28-80 macro that I adore, but that’s the closest thing I have to this one. No comparison.

    Love B&H but think I’ll have to pass on this guy for now.

    I have already spent my quota on lenses for the year (AF VR Zoom-NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D ED). But I am curious would you have a recommendation for a lens that you would use to take pictures of older photos for restoration? I love the work you do!

  6. Taylor, Thanks unfortunately I’ve not tried to do that kind of photography so I don’t have a first hand recommendation I could give you. I’ll ask my buddies and see what they come up with.

    Please note that comment #7 (trackback of D700 Daily Round Part II) is a splogger-site copying my RSS feed and changing random words with random synonyms. My original post says “taken with the D700”, and “taken at Adobe’s”, not “condemned”.

    I think millions of photographers would love to be “condemned” to take pictures with the D700 + 14-24mm lens combo 🙂

    What is your review now that you’ve taken this D700+14-24mm to the Sept wedding?
    How do you like it now and is it worth upgrading? I have a D300 with a couple of lens. Thinking of going the full frame route

  9. Yeah this is an awesome lens.. Unfortunately I hardly ever use it on my D700, but the few pictures I did take turned out pretty good.

    Funny thing is I find I use this lens more on the D40 than the D700, maybe because of the crop factor.

    One of the things other than sharpness I like about the lens is its resistance to flair – you can practically point it straight at the sun and get beautiful effects.
