Adobe Releases the Illustrator CS5 HTML 5 Pack!

Adobe is pleased to announce the availability of the Adobe® Illustrator® CS5 HTML5 Pack. This add-on for Illustrator CS5 15.0.1 provides initial support for HTML5 and CSS3, extends SVG capability in Illustrator CS5, and helps you easily design web and device content. In combination with the HTML5 features available in the Adobe Dreamweaver CS5 11.0.3 updater, these new tools allow web designers to take advantage of the latest advancements in HTML5.

While HTML5 and CSS3 will not be finalized for some time, and SVG support in browsers will continue to evolve, the extension provides support for a set of currently implemented features.

Yes You Can Use JPGs in Adobe Camera RAW!

One of the questions I get all the time is "how do I open up a JPG file in Camera RAW?" Unfortunately it's not as straight forward as I'd like it to be. Simply double clicking the JPG will open it up in Photoshop as a JPG. However, if  you want to take advantage of Adobe Camera RAW's ease of use and non-destructive workflow, I'll show you how you can in this episode of the Adobe Creative Suite Video Podcast:

Apple Announces the Mac Pro Update I’ve Been Waiting For

My current "work horse" Mac is my NEW MacBook Pro core i7. Don't get me wrong, I have a Mac Pro in my home office. However, my current Mac Pro is the original Mac Pro introduced back in 2006. That's ancient in computer years. Before that purchase I was usually upgrading my tower with every other release (about every 2-3 years). Over the years I wasn't seeing significant enough performance gains to spend the money. Then they introduced an update in March of 2009 that made me think it's time to upgrade, but I just kept putting it off. Now that my favorite Adobe Creative Suite Apps are 64bit enabled with the CS5 release I knew it was time for some new hardware. The problem is  I just didn't want last year's models. So once the new MacBook Pro core i7 came out, I ordered it (from work) day one! When I got it, I ran a speed test against my Mac Pro and was wowed by the fact that it BEAT IT! Granted that really shows just how fast the new MacBook Pros have become, but what it really showed me was just how slow my old Mac Pro was. So I waited and today Apple Announced the Mac Pro update I've been waiting for. Although there was no new case design, that doesn't bother me. It does seem odd though that Apple (a company focused on design) would continue use virtually the same design they introduced with the Power Mac G5 back in 2003!

 

There are 3 new configurations, Dual Core, Quad Core (8 cores) and Dual 6 Core (12 cores)

My only debate is do I spend the $5 grand on the 12 cores or settle for the 8 cores ($3,500). My gut tells me to go 12 core simply because I don't upgrade my tower as often as I used to and the faster the machine I get the longer it will last me. I have a little bit of time to think about it because Apple is not even taking orders yet. They're saying "August" for availability. I'll likely bite the bullet and go 12 cores to have the fastest Mac rendering speeds I can get. As far as video cards go I'll replace the stock ATi card for an Nvidia card to take advantage of Adobe Premiere Pro CS5's accelerated Mercury Playback Engine. <-this was a sneak peek video before CS5 was announced.

Another Reason That Photographers Should Use Metadata: InDesign CS5 Live Captions

Some photographers keyword their images religiously. Some don't. Some even go as far as to put in Title's, Descriptions/Captions and other useful metadata in their images, others could care less. I think that the reason people don't take the time to add metadata to their images is that they don't see a benefit. Up until now you were told that the benefit would be so that you could more easily search for your images and while that certainly still holds true, if you've got a good organized catalog and folder system setup in Lightroom then you probably don't have many problems finding your images. Right? 😉

 

Now there's another reason to use metadata

With the introduction of InDesign CS5, designers and layout artists around the world can now have InDesign pull in the info directly from your photos AUTOMATICALLY and have it appear right along side your images as captions. So if you've taken the time to describe an image just right and you've put your copyright info in and given your photo a descriptive title, your vision both visually and textually will appear in the layout.
