    1. I know what you mean, I just started going to school for a degree in photo journalism and I am required to use photoshop. At least I did my research before making a purchase and discovered that CS5 is being released soon, so I downloaded the free trial version of CS4 and I’m using that until CS5 is released. I’ll purchase the new CS5 when it’s available!

    2. I totally did the same thing!! just got my CS4 today and visited the site and saw CS5 =(( early April Fools for me!

  1. OY! Who can keep up with this stuff….there should be a longer time frame between upgrades!

  2. As long as Adobe continues to lose business to fair minded consumer-friendly alternatives, the sooner we can be done with this price-gouging monopoly.

  3. Let’s hope that InDesign CS5 has made improvements to export to Adobe Digital Editions. In the future, we may not need to know XHTML, CSS and the like to convert to the ePub format. I anxiously await that day. In the meantime, perhaps some wiz from the Detroit area come out with a book or series of tutorials on this subject.

I also await a good extraction tool in Photoshop. None of the third-party plugins are very good, IMHO. Fluid Mask might be the best of the lot, but has no (gasp!) reference manual.

  4. Damn.. that was impressive. I am however a little conflicted about all these amazing features. On one hand the features are amazing and extremely time saving. On the other hand, they are making it so dummy proof that no skill will be required to do some of the things that took years of skill for others do develop/learn. What do you guys think?

    1. I whole hardedly agree! I spent 3 years pretty much building my Graphic Design Degree from scratch in the early 90’s only to graduate and face competition from 8month “Be a graphic artist” certificate holders! at the same time “templates” started showing up in MS publisher and pagemaker! I should have spent money on a stack of “for dummies” books and and 3rd party template packages!

    2. Actually, I respectfully disagree about advancing ease of use. I’m also old school, and remember building drop shadows from copied text and still manually weave text together when needed. I don’t let inevitable advances intimidate my creativity, but push it toward new discoveries, hopefully. When you animate in Flash, Max, Maya, Lightwave, whatever, you use Tweens (interpolation of motion from one keyframe to another). That doesn’t mean you’re not animating because you’re not drawing every frame. I feel the same about tech advances. To face inevitable change and stay creative I face it with a positive attitude, and hope it reflects in my work. This attitude comes from beating my head against this question many times.

    3. That dilemma has been daunting me since my earliest days in the 80’s as an apprentice in the print industry. Since then, it’s been a constant struggle on one hand, but on the other, it’s quite refreshing when something like this ‘Content Aware’ feature of PS is introduced, saving me valuable time. I’ve found that somehow, somewhere, my ‘old school’ training still proves handy time and time again!!!

  5. As long as Adobe continues to lose business to fair minded consumer-friendly alternatives, the sooner we can be done with this price-gouging monopoly.

Except that PS is not a consumer level app. For the work I do, the feature highlighted in this article is worth the price of the full app alone. HUGE time saver.

    1. Yeah, I hate people who think PS and other pro apps are for consumers. It’s called barrier to entry people. Use the free stuff for your snapshot retouching.

  6. Wow I am sooo gonna get this as soon as possible. In my view PS4 showed very little improvement over Gimp but this is the NEXT LEVEL
    GO ADOBE

  7. Too bad nothing new with FireWorks was shown :¬( The new stuff in Photoshop is ok.

  8. Terry,

When I click on the top image’s “Register Now” button, it takes me to the Asia Pacific launch of Adobe Creative Suite 5 (even though I live in Texas). Can someone fix the link?

    Thnx!

      1. Thanks for the link Terry.

Now that I have installed CS5 and use it daily, I want to congratulate all of you on an awesome new suite packed with much new functionality. I think Adobe has really hit it out of the park with this new version.

I guess the online presentation has replaced the “tour”. I miss the personal touch when you came to town to present the creative suite and hope that we will see such live events again.

  9. The absolute worst part of this is the doubled hardware minimum requirements. The new bells and whistles are much less attractive when I have to buy a new computer to benefit from them. Been there done that when transiting from CS2 to CS3 after the purchase/merger/packaging of Macromedia (which i frowned upon and still do, where were the anti-trust rabble rousers? I guess they were to busy hounding Sirius/XM) I ran TWO different computers, as I generally do with each “last OS ever” Windows upgrade. Swapping scanners, printers, etc until I was comfortable enough to commit. I’m done! congrats Adobe, but I’m switching career focus and CS4 will be the end of my adobe trail that began when they were Aldus.

    1. I feel your pain as well. I’m old enough to remember the early days of Aldus too

  10. Aren’t they just announcing something. I do believe cs5 doesn’t come out till October.

  11. Though i think Adobe has traditionally done so, is the standard upgrade pricing for CS suites going to include two levels back (CS3, in this case)?

  12. I’m very impressed by the sneak peak. I didn’t upgrade to CS4 from CS3 because CS3 seemed to be more photography oriented and CS4 didn’t really add much, while taking away a few things I used all the time. The sneak peak hits me where I live as I am constantly retouching and removing elements from photos for my clients.

I’m looking forward to seeing more.

    1. photoshop CS4 when installed in a 64bit environment (OS, drivers, software, etc) will give you two options. Photoshop CS4, and Photoshop CS4 64bit.

  13. What!?
    Why!?
    Say it ain’t so, Terry!
I JUST bought CS4 Design Premium 3 months ago from my student bookstore (and ate ramen to save up for it!). Is there no justice? Sorry, Terry and readers. I’m not mad at y’all, just bad timing. Terry, can Adobe help me out with this one, or am I SOL? (Thought I’d at least see what I can do, if anything)

    Thanks.

  14. I still have CS3 and have made it a habit to not upgrade every year but every other year. Unless you are doing this as a full time business it is too expensive to do it yearly. I was also upset when Adobe merged with Macromedia because I was using Fireworks for web stuff and Fireworks was not included in the package unless you were buying the large upgrade or buying Fireworks as a stand alone package and there was no mention of a price break to upgrade from a previous version. Fireworks 8 is where I stopped.

  15. I can’t see where anyone is answering the question if we just bought big packages of the CS4 product is Adobe going to give a resonable upgrade price…. knowing marketing they will probably gouge every penny they can out of you…..for a few small upgrades beat you down on cost. Hmmm….you wonder why America is falling into a recession…gouge gouge gouge and keep gouging.

  16. Wow! I can say nothing about it but “wow”, especially about that panorama-fix and the tree-removal!!

  17. I knew it was coming and just did not know when. My p.o. was just approved and I haven’t received the software yet – will there be a free upgrade for those of us that just bought it? If not, I’m sending it back and waiting for CS5 (wahhhh!!!!)

  18. LOOK! Lets be very clear here : For the people ( like myself ) who can afford CS5, and have a need for CS5, and who actually HAVE things important to do with it….Let us be Happy Please! If you just purchased CS4 and are mad because you just found out about CS5 coming out…, well too bad!! Do your research b4 you buy a high priced Item. Foolishness. For those of you who are ragging on how much it’ll cost…it’s simple…DON’T BUY IT! This is NOT for people who have nothing more to do with it, but to brag that they have it..Foolishness. ( Takes a deep breath ) Back to those of us who are waiting, anticipating, hyperventilating, and salivating…if it’s U>..Throw ya hands in the air and say “YEAH BABY” !!!!!

    p.s. I LUVS u Terry!

    1. These ARE legitimate concerns… we aren’t all neophytes because “WE” can’t “afford” it…

  19. I had to come back and say this as well. I want to Thank You Terry for all that you have taught me through your podcasts. 85% of what I have learned about Adobe products and how to use them was gifted to me by what you do. Thank You! I’m sure there are many many others that feel the exact same way. Thank You for taking the time out of your work and personal life to do what you do for us…keeping us in the know and in the loop! Your teaching style is sooo fabulously good! You inform with great detail, but not boggle the brain while doing so. You give great example by using situations in which we can relate to. Not too fast, to which we get lost and not too slow in which we loose interest. And, the icing on the cake is your beautiful personality and that radio voice of yours..lol. I am so exicted about CS5 and I will be getting it. And I am so looking forward to your tutorials!! We all shall learn together! Thank You & be Blessed Terry White….Keya

  20. Amazing, but this is just a few improvements of PS. What about other Adobe applications like AE, Pr, Ai?

  21. Having been trained to use CS4 for my photography, I welcome the new CS5 on one hand but am dismayed that I cannot afford to buy it.

I no longer have access to CS4 and cannot affort to buy that or CS5. Having had to retrain for photography due to being left disabled from a Brain Tumour I’m now being left in the lerch, I can do loads of necessary post processing with CS4, and don’t find cheaper products such as Elements can compare.

I now can’t go forward and can’t get the effects I want in my photography.

    I’m Fracked!

How about Adobe giving disadvantaged people a break!!!

  22. Haha! Very excited about the release of CS5. I’m using Illustrator 10 to create logos and I’m looking foward to this release!
