  1. Wow! John Derry, co-creator and frequent spokesman for Corel’s PAINTER, is now demonstrating and promoting Photoshop’s new painting engine? Has Corel cleaned house? Did Adobe hire Derry away to provide his input on PS’s natural media tools? I find this more significant and intriguing than the video of the admittedly impressive new painting capabilities in Photoshop.

  2. I am a landscape painter in traditional mediums and I originally bought Painter many years ago before it was under the Corel umbrella. I thought it might be a good idea to develop concepts and even alter photographed paintings in the digital realm and then transfer the experimental results to oil paint and canvass. But I found the Painter program to be too complex and cumbersome… most of my time was spent attempting to develop and organize brushes. I was also frustrated many times with things like “tracing paper” and I never got the hang of layers in Painter. I bought the books and I bought the videos to help understand how to work efficiently. I upgraded several times throughout the years hoping that that the program developers would actually find a way to make Painter usable for a aesthetic minded person like myself.

Corel Painter X resides on my computer, but I haven’t touched it for over a year… I doubt I will ever upgrade again! I resorted to using what I found to be more intuitive even tho perhaps less sophistcated in the digital fine art software realm…. good ole “Photoshop”!

Now with these new brushes and methodologies in Photoshop, I don’t think I will ever even touch Corel Painter again.
