Solving the Camera Strap Mystery

Several months ago I was at an event and Tom Hogarty (Adobe's Lightroom Product Manager) walks up to me and says "let's replace that Nikon camera strap with this one." He hands me an Adobe Lightroom branded strap. It has the Adobe logo on one side and the Lightroom logo on the other. I thought, "cool!". I immediately switched straps and have used that one on my smaller travel bodies ever since. I can not believe the number of emails and comments I get asking…..not where do I get an Adobe/Lightroom strap, but "who makes that strap it looks comfortable?"

I get logo'd items all the time and rarely do I think "hmm, I wonder who makes this?" This is definitely the case with this strap. Yes it is comfortable! However, not once did I ever think about who makes it?

It's by OP Tech USA

I took a few minutes to look to see who makes it and it turns out it's by OP Tech USA. I'd never heard of the company before so I went to their site and found that they have tons of straps! It actually took me a few minutes to find the right one. It turns out it's the "Superclassic 3/8".

The mystery is solved. 🙂 You can check it out ON SALE here.

  1. I too have an Op/Tech strap. It’s really comfortable and is weight-reducing so the strap takes the weight of the camera. I can now carry my camera all day and still move my neck afterwards!

  2. Terry,

I’ve been using one of those for a number of years now and still like them. Don’t have the cool branding, though.
Only issue I see is the two clips at the end of the padded part of the strap… I know it’s unlikely, but I don’t like the idea of one of those opening while I’m not holding the camera.

Used four cable-ties (black, of course) to fix that.

    Cheers,
    Steve

  3. I’ve used Op=Tech straps since the early 80’s and when I get a new camera, I buy a new strap at the same time. The straps that come with the cameras are just way to uncomfortable; especially now as cameras are heavier than the old film cameras.

  4. Not only do they make great dirt cheap camera straps, OpTech makes all kinds of other stuff that is both invaluable and economical. I actually use their rain cover (2 for less than $ 10 while my rain cover that ended up costing nearly $ 200 has been used exactly once in the Pacific Northwest). Check ’em out.

  5. I’ve had OpTech straps in the past and like them, but for security, nothing beats the Upstrap. Before Upstrap marketed their quick release strap, they studied what was available in clips. It took a long time for them to bring that strap to market because they wanted a clip that was secure. In addition, the Upstrap has kevlar fibers within the strap; it just simply won’t break. (I have no connection to Upstrap, BTW, other than being a fan of their straps).

  6. I just bought one for the beast.. a Mamiya 645 1000S medium format camera. Best 20 bucks I’ve spent so far on bells and whistles for my foray into 120/220 film.

  7. I’m with Lynn, where can I get the Lightroom strap? I know it might be a short run made for you guys but I bet a lot if us would like to get one.

  8. I’m with Dan. I have back and neck problems & the optech straps exacerbated my problem.. I have switched from the Op-tech straps to the Up Strap & for me it is the way to go.

  9. I am currently using the Crumpler’s Industry’s Disgrace, and its terrible for my neck. My other alternative is the Blackrapid R strap, its great for events, but not that great for traveling. I see Optech has a sale going on for this strap right now, thought I would give it a try. $4.89 for the strap + $3.80 shipping.

    Thanks for the recommendation!

  10. All this talk about straps make me wonder if I’m a little strange.

I have never carried my camera around my neck on a strap like that. I find it too uncomfortable and awkward having a large SLR hanging in front of me while I’m not actually using it. I wrap the strap around my wrist in such a way that the camera nestles into my hand, giving me the ability to instantly put it up to my eye. It makes it much harder for the camera to be snatched away from me and makes it less obvious in a “look at me, I have a large camera around my neck” way.

Am I the only one who does it like this and am I missing something by not having it around my neck?
