That "crashed" hard drive may be recoverable. Use Steve Gipson's SpinRite (www.grc.com) to recover it. I've used that app for years to recover data from otherwise "dead" drives.

It's designed to be booted from a CD on a standard PC, so it might not boot from your Mac. The best way to use it is to remove your "dead" drive from its case and add it as a second (or only) drive to any old PC. Boot with SpinRite and allow it to run. It might take a really long time (sometimes several days) but it be the magic you need to get that data back.

Yes, better to back up.

Terry

I would be interested in how you intergrate Mac OS server at home? I would love to figure that out With all of the Music and Photos that are running around at my house with four kids.

Thanks,
West

Dan,
Quicken has .Mac backup built in. The file is password protected and put into my password protected area of my .Mac. I'm not that concerned (famous last words).

Terry,
What program do you use to backup your financial data to .Mac? Are you concerned that the data is not encrypted on .Mac, as compared to say S3 on Amazon? Thanks for continuing to have a great blog.

Jacob,
I do still use Quicken despite the lack of features compared the Windows version. My needs (feature wise) are minimal and I'm not even on the most current version. I've used Quicken for over 10 years and it (the Mac version) does everything I need. I was disappointed that they didn't see fit to come out with a Universal Binary version this year (and they won't see another dime from me until they do), but oh well my version ain't broke.

Mr. White,
I was surprised to see that you use Quicken on your mac. I recently moved over from a pc but still run quicken on Bootcamp because of all the adverse reviews of Quicken for Mac. Have you found it to be satisfactory? If you also run Quicken for Windows on Bootcamp is there a problem backing up to Time Machine? Thanks.

Hi Eddie,
I'm intrigued by the Drobo system and everyone I know that uses it loves it. I just haven't figured out how it would fit into my current system yet and therefore haven't bought one. I'm guessing that I could make it a share point from my OS X server, but I just haven't researched it enough to find out yet. When I do, I'll blog about it here.
