Hi Nancy,
I'm trying to understand what you're trying to accomplish. So i'll just give you a list of things in hopes that I hit the right one :)
1). You can insert a Nonbreaking Hyphen by choosing it from Type->Insert Special Character->Hyphens and Dashes
2). You can insert a Nonbreaking Space by choosing it from Type->Insert White Space->Nonbreaking Space
3). You can turn off Hyphenation by unchecking Hyphenate in the Paragraph Controls on the Control Panel
You might also want to watch this video:

Terry, you are one of my favorite instructors at PSWorld. I am an alumni.
My question: I am trying to take out orphoned words in paragraphs. I have listened to the Lynda.com tutorial till I am blue in the face.
Problem is, in my CS4 InDesign, I do not have the choice to apply a non-braeking character. Only Charactertstyles. Do I have a bad install?
The turtortial shows things such as yellow highlights, which I would love, but mine does not.
I am a publisher and want to do the best for my clients with the latest software.

Ugh, a keynote in a warehouse-like room with nothing but echos and reverberations??
Thank goodness I did not go. Bad video and bad graphics can be overlooked, but bad audio is PAINFUL!!!
