Andre,
You will need to be able to boot from a 3rd drive with CopyCat on it. So in my case I used my bootable backup drive to boot from. I then launched CopyCatX and copied my old drive to my new drive. So there are 3 drives in the equation. One to boot from and run CopyCatX, one that has your existing data, apps, etc. and the new one that you're copying to.

Hi Terry,

My Seagate will arrive in a few days. I have never used CopycatX and I looked at their website and I have one question still. One I install the software do I need to hook up an external HDD via USB and then once my original MACl HDD is coped over there I open up my macbook and plug in the new 500GB Seagate then use copycatx to copy everything back over? I am sure I am making this harder then it needs to be.. :)

Thanks

Terry,

I just purchased the brand new MacBook Pro 13". I want to upgrade the hard drive like you did. Would you recommend the same drive you used in your upgrade, or is there a "newer, faster, bigger, better" drive that you would choose if you were in my position? You seem to know how to find the goodness, so I come to you!

Thanks so much

Sal, the good news is that ANY MacBook Pro that you would buy today would be suitable for shooting tethered. If you go with the 17" model, you'll not only have a larger display, but you'll also have the option for a matte screen. I haven't found the glossy screens to be much of a problem, but most photographers would prefer the matte option. Get as much RAM as you can afford and you should be good to go.

Terry

I am a photographer in the San Francisco bay area. I need your help. I have a Nikon D-3 and want to start shooting tethering. I want to purchase a Mac Pro (laptop). Can you please recommend a Make & Model with the upgrades that would be best for shooting tethering.

I bought this same drive for MBP unibody 2.4GHz and I am very disappointed, the whole laptop is vibrating very much and its much louder. I am waiting for cheaper SSD drives.

Am I mistaken but I thought the maximum memory the 2008 Mac Book Pros only held up to 4gb of memory?

Ram & Hard drives are considered customer replaceable components and DIY does not void the warranty. However if there is a problem they may try to blame the third party components eve though 500 gig drives are available from Apple. So it is best to keep the factory ram at least so it can be reinstalled for testing purposes.

Terry: I did a similar upgrade to my early '08 MB a couple months ago. Same drive and maxed the memory. I think you'll be pleased with the drive. Enjoy!

Lavonne,
I tend to use Drives that come out of my computers/laptops as backups or archive drives. The old laptops get recycled back into work to people with lesser needs (non-power users). As far as recycling a problematic drive goes, it would really depend on whether I thought the drive had real hardware problems or not? So I can't answer that one for you without knowing whether or not the drive was mechanically sound or not.
